The local refinement technique according to the damage factor is presented for
simulating cracking process. For the displacement continuity between the original mesh
and the refinement region, linear interpolation is used for the new nodes on the
boundary of refinement region. Correspondingly, the equations for solving the
displacement variables are modified. Two examples are given to show the accuracy and
the simplicity of the method. One is to simulate the cracking process of model gravity
under the horizontal load. It gives a very good result comparing with that of model test.
Another is to simulate the failure process of the Xiluodu arch dam under the increased
upstream pressure. It gives the similar result as that of model test for other arch dams.
